Icaros Desktop is a pre-configured AROS desktop environment for the PC platform, distributed on a bootable live media. The AROS Research Operating System is a open source lightweight, efficient and flexible desktop operating system, aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS 3.1 at the API level, while improving on it in many areas.

After 4 months of hard work and 15 different internal beta releases, I've finally uploaded the first (and hopefully last) "candidate release" of Icaros Desktop 1.5 on our website. This means, in a nutshell, that the final release will be available for everyone as soon as latest bugs will be fixed. A download link has been sent to entitled beta-testers. I would like to thank all people involved in this long, painful work which covered many areas of the AROS system and of your favourite distribution. First of all, kernel backport from Deadwood was a really needed update, briging back from ABIv1 more than 18 months of AROS development: this fixed a lot of things and introduced many little/big enhnacements under the hood, but on the other side it brought many regressions that Krzysztof himself and Neil Cafferkey had to fix (some of them being a system freeze when booting with wi-fi activated, the resurrection of the nasty ENV: requester with NTFS handler, and others - all fixed now). Then, there was the filesystem overhaul: moving main programs outside of the Extras drawer needed weeks of testing and path fixing in scripts, default tool icons, application settings and so on. The last regression introduced by moving files had been fixed a few days ago, re-enabling AmiBridge ability to run Amiga™ games double clicking on their ADF images. AmiBridge, on the other way, has been a completely different chapter of this little revolution. You will soon play with all the improvements it got in the latest weeks, but we've already talked about them here and here. Then, there was the usual refresh of existing software, which brought us the latest versions of VICE, pforth, XAMOS and many, many others. See you soon for the next amazing release of Icaros Desktop.
